6 things you need to know before going on holiday to the Lofoten Islands

Tips & Tricks
Bunes beach in Lofoten, Norway

The Lofoten Islands are among the most beautiful places in Europe, and anyone who has been there immediately understands why. Towering mountains, brightly coloured fishing villages and beaches you would expect to find in the tropics instead: it’s all waiting for you.

To make the most of your trip, it helps to know a few things in advance. Before packing your bags for your Lofoten holiday, we’ve put together the eight most important things to know, from the unpredictable weather and the best time to visit to getting around and paying. That way, you can start your trip to Norway’s Lofoten Islands with confidence and enjoy every kilometre from the very beginning!

Four seasons in one day are simply part of the experience

Sunshine, a shower, fog and then sunshine again: on the Lofoten Islands, you can experience all of that within a few hours, thanks to their location right in the middle of the Gulf Stream and the Atlantic Ocean. The changeable weather is exactly what makes the landscapes so dramatic and photogenic. One minute, a fjord is bathed in sunshine, and the next, a veil of mist hangs between the peaks. The scenery is incredibly varied, so make sure you're well prepared for the conditions.

TIP: pack layered clothing, including a waterproof outer layer, and check the forecast every day before setting off on a hike.

The journey itself is part of the experience

The villages of the Lofoten Islands are closer together than you might think, but the coastal roads wind, climb and dip around every bay. Allow extra time between stops, and see it as a bonus: every bend reveals a new view worth stopping for.

TIP: plan fewer miles per day than you normally would. That leaves room for a spontaneous stop at a beach or viewpoint.

The season sets the tone for your trip

A holiday in the Lofoten Islands in June feels completely different from a trip in January, and both have their own appeal.

  • In summer, you can enjoy the midnight sun, and almost all hiking trails are accessible. For your first road trip around the Lofoten Islands, we definitely recommend this time of year. Check out our tips for the best time to visit.
  • In winter, the mountains turn white and you have a chance of seeing the Northern Lights above the fjords, although some high-altitude roads and trails may be closed for a while.

TIP: if you want to tackle the famous hikes, go between June and September. For peace and quiet and the Northern Lights, October to March is your best bet.

Choose a campervan for your trip

A campervan is the easiest, and definitely the most enjoyable, way to explore the Lofoten Islands. Public transport is limited, and the best spots are often just beyond the established routes. With your own campervan, you can stop whenever you see something beautiful, spend the night overlooking a fjord, and easily adapt your plans to the weather or your mood. No need to book a different hotel for every night (which would also be more expensive), or pack and unpack your bags constantly. Just drive, stop whenever you like, and make the most of your trip.

TIP: Choose a campervan that handles the narrower coastal roads with ease, so you can get wherever you want to go.

Budget wisely, enjoy worry-free travel

Norway is one of the more expensive countries in Europe, and you’ll notice that on the Lofoten Islands too. Fortunately, a little planning goes a long way: if you do your grocery shopping in a larger town such as Svolvær or Leknes and cook for yourself in the campervan, you can keep your budget under control without sacrificing comfort. LSet a daily budget in advance and bring a few extra supplies. That way, you can enjoy the journey without having to count every penny.
