- The sea water at Lofoten’s beaches is cold all year round, even in July. A quick dip is doable, but you’ll need a wetsuit for a longer swim.
- Stick to the marked trails: the dunes and vegetation around many beaches are fragile.
- For remote beaches such as Bunes and Kvalvika, always check the weather and, where relevant, the boat schedule.
- Take your rubbish with you wherever you go, even if you’re only stopping briefly.
- Plan your route wisely: with a campervan, it’s easy to combine two or three beaches in one day during your road trip through Lofoten.
Kvalvika Beach: the most famous beach in the Lofoten Islands
No beach in Lofoten is photographed more often than Kvalvika beach. This secluded beach lies in Lofotodden National Park and is only accessible on foot or by boat, tucked between steep mountain slopes. The hike from Fredvang takes around an hour and a half each way, and anyone who also climbs to the summit of Ryten is rewarded with one of the finest views in the entire region. If you're planning a holiday in Lofoten in Norway, Kvalvika beach should be right at the top of your list.

- Tip: wild camping is allowed here in a tent, but be prepared for changeable weather and take all your rubbish with you when you leave.
Haukland Beach
Haukland beach is located on Vestvågøy and was once named the most beautiful beach in Norway. Its white sand and clear blue water are just a stone’s throw from the car park, making it one of the easiest beaches to reach in the entire region.
Tip: combine your visit with the short walk along the old mountain road to Uttakleiv beach, the next one on this list.
Bunes Beach
Bunes is tucked away on the other side of the Reinefjord and is only accessible by boat from Reine to Vindstad, followed by a hike of about 2.8 kilometres. That’s exactly why it remains one of the quietest beaches in the entire archipelago, surrounded by the impressive peaks of Helvetestinden and Storskiva.

- Time: 2–4 hours (return)
- Level: easy
- Tip: check the boat schedule in advance, because you really don’t want to miss the last boat back to Reine.
Uttakleiv Beach
Right next to Haukland beach, you'll find Uttakleiv, a pebble beach dotted with large, smooth boulders. In summer, you can enjoy the midnight sun here late into the evening. In winter, it's one of the best places in Lofoten to spot the northern lights, far from the lights of any village.
Tip: Go at sunset, when the rocks and water glow in warm hues.
Skagsanden: a surfer’s paradise
Skagsanden on Flakstadøya is Lofoten’s most popular surf beach, with good waves all year round for surfers of every level. The water is icy cold, so a thick wetsuit is definitely a good idea. Even without a surfboard, it’s worth a visit: at low tide, beautiful patterns appear in the black and white sand.
Tip: Unstad Beach is another great place to surf. You’ll find surfers from all over the world there year-round.
Ramberg: a beach for the whole family
Rambergstranda is right next to the village of Ramberg on Flakstadøya and is one of the most accessible beaches in Lofoten. You can park practically on the sand. That makes it perfect for a quick stop, a picnic or a refreshing swim, without having to go on a long hike.
Tip: combine your visit with a short drive to Skagsanden, just a few kilometres away.
